It’s been a record breaking weekend in Europe after the latest round of action. Let’s now take a look at some of the main protagonists:
VARDY BREAKS EPL SCORING RECORD
It was all about Jamie Vardy on Saturday and whether he could beat Ruud van Nistlerooy’s Premier League goalscoring record as Leicester City entertained Manchester United. We didn’t have to wait long for an answer as the player, who only three years ago was playing amateur football, fired home for the 11th game in succession as his team drew 1-1 with the Red Devils to go top of the table. All eyes will now focus on January and whether his club will be able to fight off the inevitable transfer offers.
REINA HOLDS FIRM TO CLAIM CLEAN-SHEET RECORD
More records went tumbling on Monday evening at the San Paolo Stadium in Naples, as goalkeeper Pepe Reina, became the new holder of the longest time without conceding a league goal in Europe this season. The Spaniard’s goal was finally breached in the second-half of his clubs 2-1 win by Inter’s Adem Ljajic, which brought to an end 533 minutes of league action without having to pick the ball out of his net. A terrific save at the end of the match also ensured his team took all three points from a nerve-wracking contest to top the Serie A standings for the first time in 25 years.
EMOTIONS RUN HIGH AS PSG RETURN TO THE FRENCH CAPITAL
It was almost incidental that Paris Saint-Germain recorded their 15th straight win in the French top-flight last weekend as they returned to the capital for the first time since the terrorist attacks of just over two weeks ago. A resounding rendition of the French national anthem the “Marseillaise” echoed around the Parc des Princes prior to kick-off, with messages of support from some of the biggest names in world football shown on the stadium’s big screen. As the city attempts to get back to as normal a life as is humanly possible, the city’s football club continues to dominate domestically.
LEWANDOWSKI ENTERS INTO THE RECORD BOOKS
Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has been officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Records after he scored the quickest ever hattrick, four and five goal haul and the most goals by a substitute, in his sides 5-1 hammering of Wolfsburg back in September. On receiving four separate accolades, the Polish international declared that; “It was a great evening for me, a historic evening. It will remain in the fans’ memories forever and mine too. I didn’t have too much time to think about what I had done. “He’s now quoted on the best football betting sites at *2.10 to be the Bundesliga top scorer this season.
McCLAREN UNDER FIRE AS NEWCASTLE COLLAPSE AGAIN
