Whether he did bite Everton defender Gareth Barry or not last weekend, Diego Costa’s future for both current club and country has taken another sorry turn and the damage done this time, could have more serious consequences.
CHELSEA EXIT NOW IMMINENT
Costa has been charged by the Football Association for “Improper conduct” after his sending off on Saturday against Everton and although his victim Gareth Barry, has publicly denied that the player took a bite at his neck when the two squared up to each other, it seems the 27-year-old could be set for a lengthy spell on the side-lines. He looks set to miss the next three matches because of his actions and reports this week have stated that he is looking for a move away from the Premier League with the Spanish international linked with a move back to former club Atletico Madrid (currently priced at *4.00 on some betting exchanges).
INTERNATIONAL FUTURE IN SERIOUS DOUBT
It seems also that Spanish national team coach Vicente Del Bosque has lost patience with the striker and is set to leave him out of the upcoming friendlies against Italy and Romania. Having chosen to play for Spain over his native Brazil, Costa looked certain to be on the plane to France this summer to represent them at the European Championships. As things stand at the present time, Del Bosque looks to be intent on finding alternatives up front as his country looks to defend their title. This omission comes at a time when his club form has returned to something resembling that of last season, having found the net 11 times in 16 matches under interim coach Gus Hiddink.
ALWAYS CAST AS THE PANTOMIME VILLAIN
His combative and volatile nature on the pitch has seen him cast as the pantomime villain in the eyes of the British public. Constant debates rage about what is and isn’t acceptable on the field of play, with Costa always pushing the boundaries to the very limit. Despite this, last Saturday was the first time he has been dismissed since he joined Chelsea in 2014. It’s been a frustrating season for his club side and this; along with the constant battles he seems to face with Premier League referees, looks to have made up his mind that the next two months will be his last in England. The frustration of a Champions League and FA Cup exit in the space of five days, plus the fact that the West London club are almost certain to miss out on a top-four finish (currently quoted at a massive **34.00 on the best football betting sites) meaning no Champions League football next season, seems to have pushed Costa closer to the exit door at Stamford Bridge; His departure, though welcome in certain quarters, will ultimately be seen as a blow for the English game.
