Naas – A Guide To Irish Flat Racecourses

Naas Racecourse

Naas Racecourse is a undulating, galloping left handed track. There is a very stiff uphill finish of around four furlongs from the final bend to the winning post.

The circuit is about a mile and a half in circumference and there is an extended chute attached to the main course for races over five to six furlongs whilst there is a slightly smaller chute for races over a mile which is also attached to the main circuit on another part of the course. It is a dual purpose venue hosting both Flat and Jump racing

They host about seventeen meetings a year (It can vary slightly year to year). There are ten pattern races in total, eight of which are listed class in status and two group three races, namely the Blue Wind Stakes which is a recognised Oaks trial for three year old fillies which takes place in the month of May and is raced over a mile and a quarter.

The other group three race is the Lacken Stakes which also occurs in the month of May but is run over seven furlongs, the race is restricted to three year old colts and fillies.

If there is any advantage to be had from the draw then you are likely to find it in races over a trip of either five or six furlongs where being posted low can be beneficial.  There doesn’t appear to be a draw bias as you go up in distance.

With a stiff uphill finish of around half a mile , it is certainly one of the more stamina sapping courses in Ireland and horses who have shown good conditioning as well as good battling qualities often do well round here. It is paramount that they have the required stamina in abundance, any shortfall will become apparent fairly quickly.

There aren’t too many trainers that specialise in getting a consistent amount of winners and demonstrating profitability at the same time in certain race types but G Lyons is borderline worth mentioning and his record with a two year old is listed below for your information.

Please note: Profit and Loss figures (P/L) is based on level stakes betting of one Euro per bet to SP.

Additional notes; I would suggest backing his juveniles in sprint races, therefore meaning a distance range from five to six furlongs. There is a slight negative return from a betting investment point of view when backing the yards runners over further.
